He grew up loving life on the water. He first started tying flies at the age of 10, using sewing thread and clumps of dog hair from his shedding Collie, he created his first “fly”. The fly tying really got serious around the age of 20 while living on the western slopes of Colorado. After holding his created flies close to his chest for many years, only sharing them with his closest fishing friends, he decided that he wanted to share as many flies as possible with the world. His first pattern came from a sleepless night, laying in bed trying to figure out a great freestone fly, but one that could also catch fish in the sometimes tricky tail waters of Colorado. The idea came and the first draft of the Micro Matcher was tied at 5am that morning. Walter has now moved back to the Denver area where he pursues athletic training and tests his flies on any river every chance he gets. If you ever see him on the water don’t be afraid to ask what flies he’s using. He will not only tell you, but probably give you some flies to try out. In the spring, I’ll fish this on a much shorter leader, around 3” on a sink-tip or full-sinking line, when we usually have higher, dirtier water. Sometimes I’ll even fish two of these tandem, one lighter and one darker color, until I find what the fish are responding to. Short quick strips are usually the name of the game, but I will swing these through the current as well on some occasions. Change your stripping pattern up and let the fish tell you what they want!”

- Signature Tyer Matt Bennett

Tag nymphs are certainly not new to fly fishing. Originally tied on a Tiemco 811S hook,” BIG RODNEY” has been a go-to fly for snook, tarpon, pike, and bass. For the past few years, this designer has been concentrating his creative efforts on “crossover patterns”; flies that are equally versatile in both fresh and saltwater. “BIG RODNEY” is such a pattern and has repeatedly proven its effectiveness in both venues. This past year, I altered the pattern by incorporating Flymen’s articulated big game shank and switched over to a Tiemco 600SP hook.

"This pattern has been a mainstay in my box for over 15 years. Both of these components have resulted in a virtually indestructible fly which can withstand the rigors and abuse of the toughest of game fish. The Morningwood Special in golden stone coloration matches the natural perfectly, and works well as the dry in a dry–dropper rig as well as a general attractor all summer long. Crosses over well for hoppers too. When your first thought might be "Stimulator", give the Golden Wood a try! His favorite fly was the Parachute Adams. The only problem was floatation on a river that is one long riffle, as dries frequently sink in the "chop". There were also visibility problems with the white post in the afternoon glare. Mike needed a new fly and he looked to foam. These Foam Parachutes are the successfully tested results. The solution was the use of Larva Lace flat foam cut into very thin strips. This foam is then wound as a thorax. The foam will also take an application of dry fly paste for ex– tended buoyancy. The result is a new wrinkle on an old standard that floats like a cork. Mike changed the post from calf tail to more buoyant macramé yarn in yellow and orange for better visibility on chop and glare.
